Reusable Bag Shame

By admin | May 29, 2008

I love the new reusable bag craze.  Why I didn’t switch over sooner, I don’t know.  Publix, the best grocery store Tampa has to offer, sells reusable bags that are the exact right size.  The problem is they say “Publix” on them.  Maybe this isn’t a real problem, after all I do love Publix.  But when I went to our other grocery store, Sweetbay, I felt guilty using Publix bags so I bought a Sweetbay reusable bag.  This one is great too because it folds and snaps closed and I can keep it in my bag to use all the time.  However, I feel odd shopping at one store and breaking out my reusable bags from another store.  I don’t really want to buy bags for every store I shop in either.  Half the time, the cashiers don’t notice anyway, but I was wondering if anyone else had reusable bag shame?

There are lots of places that offer reusable bags that aren’t affiliated with a specific store. In Steamboat Springs, our local recycling initiative offered bags at the stores that say ‘Yampa Vally Recycles’ so I have no concerns about taking them any place. I can see your dilemma, but maybe check out reusable bags on-line to find a design you like.

I actually prefer to use bags from other stores. That way they know I’m not trying to sneak a new one past the cash register! Okay, my bags are used enough that they’re not likely to think that anymore.

I’ve actually had more trouble with the reusable mesh produce bags that I try to remember to use. My regular grocery store seems to be confused by them.

That’s so funny! My hubby says the same thing when we take our Publix green bags into another store (WalMart, Target, Albertsons, etc). But I don’t care…I just carry my bags proudly! I’m starting to see more people using them though…it’s rather refreshing.

Yeah, sometimes the clerks looked at me like I might be trying to pass a new bag off as an old one but now mine are old too. I think when they are all worn out I will buy non branded ones… and it is great to see so many people using them!

God, I totally do. I also occasionally feel embarrassed about using my bags from the fancy-schmancy Whole Foods at my lovely, down-to-earth farmer’s market. I’ve got my Whole Foods bags stuffed in a drawer with my Piazza’s (a similar local store), and sometimes I wonder if they’re in there, duking it out.
